What Exactly Are Executive Functions?

Executive Functions are a set of mental skills that are housed primarily in the brain's prefrontal cortex. They allow you to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully.


When we talk about Executive Functions in adults and professionals, we typically focus on three main pillars. It's important to remember that the full scope of Executive Functions is vast and highly interconnected, but these three pillars provide the most relevant foundation for immediate improvement.


1. Working Memory

This isn't your long-term memory of high school dates; it’s the mental space where you temporarily hold and manipulate information needed to complete a task.

  • Strength in this area looks like: remembering the five steps of a complex project while simultaneously performing step one.

  • Struggle in this area looks like: Forgetting what you walked into a room for, needing instructions repeated multiple times, or losing track of the main point during a meeting.


2. Inhibitory Control & Focus

This is your ability to stop one behavior and choose a more appropriate one. It includes impulse control and sustained attention.

  • Strength in this area looks like: Stopping yourself from checking social media when you should be working, or refrain from interrupting a client.

  • Struggle in this area looks like: Impulse buying, frequently losing your place in a document, or difficulty sitting through long meetings without fidgeting or distracting yourself.


3. Cognitive Flexibility (Shifting)

This is your mental ability to fluidly shift between tasks, ideas, or priorities as demands change.

  • Strength in this area looks like: Smoothly transitioning from working on your budget to helping your child with homework, or pivoting your project strategy when a critical variable changes.

  • Struggle in this area looks like: Getting mentally "stuck" when a routine is broken, struggling to move on after a minor failure, or becoming overly rigid in your thinking.

Why Executive Function Struggles Hit Adults So Hard

It’s easy to assume these skills are static, but they are highly trainable! When an adult struggles with executive functions, it impacts every aspect of adult life.

  • Career: Missed deadlines, difficulty delegating, poor prioritization, and feeling perpetually behind.

  • Relationships: Chronic lateness, forgetting important events or details, losing important items.

  • Home: Disorganization and mess, half-completed project, lost paperwork, and forgotten bills.

  • Emotional Health: Constant sense of chaos, losing things, and feelings of shame about struggles erode self-esteem.


The biggest mistake people make is treating an EF deficit as a moral failing or a willpower issue. It is neither. It’s a skill deficit and skills can be taught, practiced, and strengthened. The brain is capable of growing, changing and adapting at all ages.
